Tell us a bit about yourself and your business. How did your creative journey begin?
I started writing in 2012 after a time of being unwell. I was reading a lot of books and was getting bored of reading the same tropes and storylines just told by a different author. My husband joked one day when he came to visit me after surgery, “write your own book then.” I published my first book by a publishing company in 2014, but they weren’t the best. I quickly found self-publishing and haven’t looked back since. I love the creative freedom that self-publishing can give. That brought around KML Publishing, which I’ve published under for nearly 12 years.
Just this year I’ve expanded KML Publishing to KML Publishing Services, because I want to be able to help create a bridge between authors and readers and authors and service providers. We offer helpful hints and tips to new authors entering the indie world, and we love to promote books by new and experienced indie authors.
What inspired you to start offering your current services or products?
I was fed up seeing people being scammed, which is what made me expand this year. So many new authors enter the indie world every year and don’t get past the first hurdle because they’re scammed out of their hard-earned cash. They don’t know which way to turn next. KML Publishing Services is here to help.
As a stay at home mum to three children (2 of which have additional needs) my day is very structured. I work between 1 and 3 (at my little one’s nap time) and I work between 7 and 10p.m every evening. In between these times my day is a mixture of mum tasks, household chores, and chaos.
What’s your favourite part of the creative process? And what’s the most challenging?
My favourite part of the creative process is writing that first draft. Getting that story down on paper or computer when it’s flowing is the biggest boost.
The most challenging thing for me would probably be finding time for my own work. I’m good at putting my own work aside to help others.
How do you stay inspired or motivated during busy or difficult times?
My kids are my biggest motivation. I want to continue to be a stay-at-home mum to be around for my toddler who is autistic and suffers with many neurological traits, and that keeps me going.
Do you have a favourite project you’ve worked on recently? What made it special?
My favourite project I’ve published has to be The Gift Of Life, because while it is fiction, it has elements of my life in it., My fertility struggles and baby loss to eventually bring my 2.5-year-old into the world. I wanted to raise awareness about PPROM and incompetent cervix.
What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own creative or service-based business?
Just do it! Life is too short to dream about something and never go for it. You'll never know if you don't try.
In what ways do you support the creative community?
I like to think I give authors an outlet to vent, to talk about their work in progress, and to talk about their struggles. KML Publishing Services is a one stop group for everything an author needs to get well on their way in the indie world.
Are there any upcoming projects, launches, or goals you’re excited about?
This year, we’re hosting our very first Advent calendar. Throughout the month of December, we’re showcasing authors who have a free or 99p/99c Christmas book.
